Here are some shopping tips to help you get started eating more raw foods.
- Experiment: try new foods. There are hundreds of fruits and vegetables. Look around the produce department; have you tried every single item there?
- Get in touch with the foods your body finds to be most flavorful or refreshing and observe and select the most fragrant and visually attractive foods.
- Don’t over-stock perishable foods. Shop often. I recently read an article that stated that most people throw away 25% of the food they buy. Be aware of how much you eat, how much you eat just so you don’t have to throw something away and how much of your food goes bad. Just because the sale is 2 for $1.00 doesn’t mean you have to buy 2, usually the price for 1 is $.50. Buy only what you can eat.
- Buy your mainstays in bulk quantities. Things like apples and oranges have a fairly long shelf life. Keep some around in case your other fruit is not ripe. Apples and oranges are also great for snacks and they travel well.
- Buy organic if possible but don’t let this stop you from going raw. Conventionally grown produce eaten raw is always a better choice than cooked food.
- Be sure to frequent farmer’s markets in your area to get local fresh produce.
- Look for produce that is in season. It is generally cheaper and fresher.
- Don’t go down any of the grocery aisles when shopping. Stick to the produce department.
- Store your produce in Forever Bags.
